As Iowa lawmakers continue to debate inside the Iowa Capitol, the bottle bill continues to be a topic of discussion.
State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman says times have changed since it has been put into place and Chapman says some people feel bottles and cans should be removed from grocery store redemption centers.
“If you’ve ever had an opportunity to tour one of these redemptions in a grocery store they are really unsanitary and here we have food coming in in the same area, it’s concerning. We are trying to find solutions to maintain a positive environmental impact while also recognizing that times have changed.”
Chapman says with the rise of things like curbside recycling this limits the number of cans and bottles that are actually being redeemed but customers still pay the five cent deposit.
“A number of these cans and bottles are not being redeemed yet people are paying a deposit on them and it’s not that they are throwing them away they are simply recycling them. They are putting them in their curbside recycling bins.”
Chapman says anything could happen with the bill as it is funnel proof because it deals with tax policy.
