The statistics for COVID-19 cases and positivity rate have slowly started going back up in recent weeks in Iowa, and public health officials think it could be because of less social distancing practices.
Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran explains this potential link as a reason for the increase.
“The experts have told us that as more people are letting their guard down they are spreading germs. Previously, when most people were following social distancing guidelines and wearing face masks there was a decrease in infection rates. The uptick in cases seems to be directly related to people gathering in groups, traveling and just no longer wearing a face mask.”
While Governor Kim Reynolds recently relaxed mask mandates around the state, Cochran cautions against those who are considering not wearing a mask in a public setting.
“Those people who are saying ‘oh I’m tired of wearing a mask I just want things to get back to normal’ the pathway back to normal is, for the time being, continue wearing the mask.”
Cochran notes it’s still important to practice social distancing like staying home when you are sick.
