A bill that is awaiting Governor Kim Reynolds to sign into law would no longer require a legal Iowa citizen to have a permit to carry a firearm.

House Representative for District 19 Carter Nordman feels the legislation will strengthen the safety of Iowans. Nordman notes people will still have the option to obtain their permit to carry which will still have benefits.

“If you get a permit today, you go through one background check and it’s good for five years. If someone decides not to get a permit anymore, they will have to get a background check every single time they purchase a weapon.”

Nordman believes this will increase the amount of background checks that will take place in Iowa. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio there is also an increased penalty for someone who sells a firearm to someone who can’t have one to a felony, which will also increase safety for Iowans.

The bill passed last week out of the Iowa Senate with a vote of 31-17.
