What has sometimes been viewed as a contentious bill was recently passed by the Iowa House and Senate that no longer requires a permit to carry a firearm.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green says constituents in his district were calling for a change in state law that no longer requires someone who is legal to own a firearm needing a “permission slip” to carry it. However, he says one compromise that was made was those who don’t have a permit to carry must be subjected to a federal background check anytime they purchase a firearm. He still recommends everyone to obtain their permit to carry.
“Go ahead and get your permit to carry still because not only will you be able to buy a firearm quicker, you’ll be able to go to other states and they will still recognize our permits. There’s nothing wrong with still getting a permit. But with this bill, at the heart of it, it makes it an option and not a requirement to utilize your second amendment rights.”
Green believes the bill allows for another process for those wanting to purchase a firearm for protection.
“If they really feel that need and feel compelled to do so I trust that they are going to be responsible and do what’s necessary to protect themselves and their family.”
If the bill becomes law, Iowa would join 19 other states that have a similar law.
