During his interview for this week’s PM Sports Page, Athletic Director David Doley talked about the challenges West Central Valley faces outside of COVID-19. While everyone is dealing with the struggles of the pandemic, there are a few issues that are coming up as well.
The issue that Doley referred to was the shortage of coaches and referees for all sports. First, Doley was asked what he thought was the cause for the shortage of coaches. He stated that he thinks it’s because coaches are committing a lot of time and work for not a lot of compensation.
Doley was then asked why he thought there was a shortage of referees in Iowa high school sports. He thinks a lot the issues come from travel. Due to the shortage a lot of referees have to travel from long distances to officiate games.
Despite the shortage of coaches and referees, unlike last year, the spring season will happen.
