With this week being Severe Weather Awareness Week, there are several driving safety reminders.

Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely offers these safety tips when it’s sometimes unavoidable to be caught out driving in severe weather.

“Turning on your headlights, adjust your speed for the road conditions so turning off cruise control, if you had it on, just due to the potential for hydroplaning. You can tune your local radio into whatever channel that’s playing any sort of updated weather information.”

With this Seely tells Raccoon Valley Radio that if it became necessary to seek shelter while you are driving there are places you can go. He says there are some public places to seek shelter but there are places you should steer away from.

“Definitely avoid overpasses. If there is severe weather happening under an overpass isn’t always a great place because the winds can actually kind of be magnified as they pass through that constricted area.”

Additionally, during Severe Weather Awareness Week, there will be a statewide tornado drill at 11 a.m. Wednesday and Raccoon Valley Radio will detail our Severe Weather Action Team and how we help keep people safe whenever there is severe weather in Dallas, Greene and Guthrie counties.
