Two federal Iowa lawmakers have introduced a bill to tighten up laws against illegal immigrants.
Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District Representative Randy Feenstra and U.S. Senator Joni Ernst have partnered together to introduce similar bills in the House and Senate called “Sarah’s Law.” Feenstra describes the background of the bill and why it’s named “Sarah’s Law.”
“This is with Sarah Root. She was a young Iowan who was killed by an illegal immigrant who was drunk driving and drag racing. Due to a loophole, he (the immigrant) was released and he’s since disappeared, so there’s no prosecution. So we’re creating a bill that will make sure that the Root family gets justice that they deserve, and make sure this tragedy doesn’t happen again.”
Feenstra says the legislation would require immigration authorities to keep illegal immigrants in custody if they are accused of killing someone causing serious bodily injury.
