With more people becoming eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, Greene County Public Health is trying to keep up with the demand.
Public Health Director Becky Wolf says they continue to get about 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine, while Hy-Vee Pharmacy in Jefferson receives about 300 doses. Wolf points out that they receive their vaccines through Iowa Department of Public Health, while Hy-Vee Pharmacy receives their shipment through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Retail Pharmacy Program. However, even with that amount of weekly vaccines coming to Greene County, Wolf says that still isn’t enough to keep up.
“The bottom line is there simply is not enough vaccine for everybody. So we have to ask for everybody to just please, please be patient and understanding. We’re trying our best to be fair and equitable at getting as many people vaccinated in the different groups as possible.”
President Joe Biden recently signed the close to $2 trillion COVID-19 relief package, which includes more production and distribution of the vaccine. Wolf is hopeful that they will receive even more than 100 weekly doses.
“To be able to have access to even more vaccine would be fantastic. Because that is going to speed up the process of, before we’re all fully vaccinated, or at least a majority of our population is fully vaccinated.”
Public Health is currently allowing those 65 and older and individuals in Phase 1B Tier 1 and Tier 2 groups to sign up for a vaccine.
