Greene County and Paton-Churdan are going to send several students to this week’s Iowa High School Speech Association State Individual contest.
Greene County Speech Coach Kelley Gray there are nine students that qualified from the district competition from last February. Those who will be competing include Makala Kafer, Blake Kaufman, Ava Schilling, Allee Hinote, Maddie Truitt, Josey Weaver, Madison Hall, and Eliot Schilling who qualified in two events.
Paton-Churdan Speech Coach Kellie Henderson says Autumn Consier qualified with solo musical theater. The sophomore will perform “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John. She describes her reaction to advancing to state for solo musical theater.
“I was very surprised. I think it was fine but I swore I had better practices than that. I was just afraid that I wasn’t going to get to state, and I thought I was going to get a (Division) II(-rating). I was already accepting that fact that I wasn’t going to state. So it was a bit of a shocker to realize that I was going to state competition.”
The state contest will take place tomorrow at Perry High School.
