With Iowa legislators making their way through the first funnel week, more language is being considered for the 2nd Amendment to the state’s constitution at the Iowa Capitol.
State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman says there are multiple states throughout the country who have permitless carry of a firearm, which Chapman says basically means if you are legal age and not a felon you have a legal right to carry a firearm.
“This is not a new concept. It’s one that I fully support. I believe you absolutely have a right to utilize the 2nd Amendment without having to go to government and pay to be able to utilize that constitutional right.”
With this proposed change Chapman says it would not get rid of things like background checks or other regulations that are in place, whether those are federal or state requirements.
“This bill does not get rid of background checks. There is a number of federal regulations that states are not going to be able to preempt. You still have to go through a background check to be able to acquire a firearm. This doesn’t get rid of those type of requirements.”
The proposed bill made it past the initial funnel deadline last week which funnel week sees some bills become dead if they have not made it through the proper committees in time.
