Nodaway Valley Girls basketball competed in Friday’s semifinals for 2A basketball against Maquoketa Valley, losing in a heartbreaker 47-45 to officially end the Wolverines season. The Wildcats move to the championship game at 25-0 while the Wolverines conclude an incredible run at 24-1.
The Wolverines trailed 26-24 at halftime in a wild back and forth pace, but the Wildcats were to expand their lead to six 39-33 at the end of the third quarter. Nodaway Valley came all the way back in the fourth quarter and was able to tie it up at 45 after senior Macy Kuhns made a layup with the foul to tie it with 45 seconds left. Maquoketa Valley played keep away from the Wolverines but a foul was called with six second left which sent Ella Imler to the line, where she hit two free throws. Nodaway Valley had an opportunity to tie or take the lead with 4.5 seconds left but couldn’t get a shot off.
The Wolverines were able to get 15 points out of junior Maddax DeVault, and 11 points out of freshmen Lindsay Davis. Wildcats got 19 points out of Emerson Whittenbaugh. Both teams shot the basketball well throughout the game as the Wolverines shot 53% from the field, but couldn’t get enough stops against the highly efficient Maquoketa Valley offense.
For the Wolverines, they will be losing three starters from their team but will be keeping around a couple of key players in DeVault and Davis. The Wolverines complete their greatest season in school history, broke a lot of records, and won a game as well. These girls should hold their heads high after an incredible season.
