Mc Kinley Robbins
Greene County sophomore McKinley Robbins is the most recent high school wrestling State Champion from the Jefferson-based program, and just the fourth overall. He won the Class 2A 120 lbs. State title on Feb. 20 in Des Moines to cap a 34-0 season and is the youngest of the four champions the program has produced. David Hagedorn (1979), Erik Strawn (1982), and Will Thomsen (1994) were all seniors when they won State titles. All four had undefeated seasons when they won it all.
Elite athletes in wrestling, like many other high school sports, participate not only for their high schools, but on Club teams. Robbins wrestles all year with Sebolt Wrestling Academy, who moved their headquarters to Jefferson last summer. He talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about having a set of high school coaches, and others outside of high school. “They’re very different coaching styles and I think that actually helps me a lot. Having the two helps my overall technique and my knowledge evolve.”
Robbins plans on wrestling in a number of freestyle events this spring and summer.
