Today is the second and final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Cedar Falls hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. The event is being held inside the UNI-Dome. Carter Morton from Jefferson is a UNI freshmen who is taking part in the heptathlon as well as the high jump.
Carter’s Dad, Chad, is the boys’ head track & field coach at Greene County High School and he talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about his son being a Division I college athlete. “Carter’s in the heptathlon, which is seven events. It’s his first time pole vaulting, his first time throwing the shot, first time running the 1,000 (meters), which is his least favorite event. He’s competing! He’s a freshman and is learning what it takes to be an athlete at that level, and the practice that it takes for each event. I think it’s good for him to be doing that many events because if he were just in the high jump or just one event I think it would get more tiresome for him to repeatedly to that. He’s doing well and he enjoys it.”
Other teams in The Valley in addition to UNI, are Bradley, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Missouri State, Loyola of Chicago, and Valparaiso.
