The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Thursday.
During open forum, resident Chris Henning requested from the Board a policy for outside organizations and groups to make requests to use the Greene County Courthouse and its grounds for gatherings and events. She asked for a policy by March 15th so she could communicate any information to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship before this year’s Greene County Farmers Market begins in early summer. The Board thought they could work on a policy but it may not be completed by March 15th.
County Attorney Thomas Laehn then gave an update. He said there are 16 criminal cases scheduled for the county’s first jury trial date of March 2nd. He added there were 87 pending criminal cases in the county and the Iowa Supreme Court has extended the one-year speedy trial law to February 1, 2022 due to the pandemic and the court system being closed for a period of time.
The Board set March 8th at 9am for the public hearing on the proposed property tax levies for the 2022 fiscal year. The proposed percentage of increase in dollars raised is 2.16-percent for general services and 5.25-percent for rural services. This Thursday’s meeting will be the last scheduled one for the year, unless a special session needs to happen.
