The Atlantic Trojans were 65-29 Class 3A Region 1 first round girls’ basketball winners over Greene County on Saturday in Atlantic. The Rams end the season with a 6-19 record while the Trojans improve to 9-13 and face top ranked Washington of Cherokee in Cherokee on Wednesday night.
Junior Brianna Habben had 14 points and six rebounds for the Rams, with nine points and nine rebounds for senior Brianna Osterson. Atlantic had 28 points from Haley Rasmussen, the all-time leading scorer in that school’s five-player history. Twenty of Rasmussen’s points were in the first half, and the other eight came in the third quarter.
Turnovers were an issue for the Rams as they turned the ball over 36 times, 24 in the first half. Atlantic had only 11 turnovers. Atlantic made 24 of 54 shots including six of 16 tries from three-point range, and Greene County went two of six on three-pointers and 11 of 34 overall. The Trojans led 37-14 at halftime.
The game was the final one for five Greene County basketball seniors. Osterson is joined by Eliza Carlson, Makala Kafer, Lily Muir, and Sadie Wilson. Coach Todd Gordon’s team doubled the three wins of the 2019-20 team and had five more victories than two seasons ago.
