Both Greene County varsity basketball teams ended their regular seasons on Tuesday night with road wins in Des Moines at Saydel High School. The 46-31 girls’ victory stopped a five game losing streak and the boys’ 75-48 win snapped a skid of six games.

The win put the Greene County girls at 6-12 overall and 3-7 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action while the Eagles fell to 2-13, 0-10. Makala Kafer had 11 points for the Rams with nine points and 11 rebounds by Brianna Osterson. Brianna Habben chipped in eight points and six rebounds. Saydel had nine points for Orianna Martin. The Rams trailed 12-10 after one quarter, but held the Eagles without a field goal all of the second quarter and half of the third. By that time, the Rams had built the lead to the middle teens and late in the contest led by as many as 16 points. Greene County had one of its best shooting nights of the season at 40% while Saydel made just 19 percent of its field goal attempts.

Greene County’s boys reached a season high point total in stopping their six game losing streak. Up 17-12 after one quarter, the lead grew to 40-22 at halftime and it kept increasing to as many as 29 points late in the game. All of the starters for the Rams only scored in the first three quarters led by Bryce Stalder with 26 points. Jesse Miller had 12 points and Richard Daugherty 11. Daugherty had six rebounds with five each by Miller and Jackson Morton. The Rams made 12 of 28 shots from three-point range and were 30 of 61 overall.

The girls open the postseason on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. on KG98 in Atlantic vs. the Trojanns. The boys start postseason play on Monday, Feb. 15 in Burnside vs. Southeast Valley.
