Following a busy last week for the Iowa Senate, one lawmaker continues to do work in his committees.

District 24 Senator Jesse Green says one bill he is looking to update is the bottle bill that was first established in 1978. He points out that several people believe the current system is broken because it hasn’t been updated since it was first passed as a law, however several lawmakers have their own opinion about how to update it. Green says he is pushing for redeemable cans and bottles to go from $0.05 to $0.10, however he talks about where the majority of discussions are happening.

“But it seems like the $0.07 one is where a lot of people are landing. With that we would double the handling fee (and) we would see more redemption centers as a result of that. We would leave all retail exempt. And if we did that, that would drive more business to redemption centers.”

Other legislation Green is working on includes a tax credit incentive for new employees who move to Iowa to seek employment and to establish grant opportunities for existing meat lockers to expand their services and facilities.
