A pair of amendments to the Iowa Constitution concerning gun ownership and abortion are working their way through the legislature.

One amendment guarantees the right for people to keep and bear arms. The other amendment is stating that there is no state guaranteed right to an abortion. State Representative for House District 20 Ray Sorensen gives more details on how the Iowa voters ultimately control these amendments.

“You have a chance in one of the two years of a General Assembly to pass an amendment. Then, you have to wait until the next two years of the General Assembly to pass it again. Then, it has to go to a vote of the people on the ballot. I love the fact that the people of Iowa get the final say on their Constitution. I think that is an absolute amazing piece to this, and what should always be the final hurdle is the people of Iowa.”

Sorensen adds that the citizens of Iowa have the option to support or reject these amendments through their vote of members to the General Assembly. He also says the General Assembly changes in other ways like member resignations.
