The West Central Valley Speech Team had two of their three improvisational groups qualify for state from the district competition Thursday.
Groups B and C, performing “Stuck in a Corn Maze” and “Calling the Hogs Home” respectively, each earned a Division I-rating. Group A’s “On Noah’s Ark” received a two score.
Head speech coach Nancy Bauch says she was happy to have the competition, but they missed seeing other students and performances.
“We’re so used to traveling to another school, and that’s part of the whole fun of it too is traveling to another school, meeting the other students. I think it made them more nervous. I really do. Whenever we have done this in years past, we’d perform in front of [our] school as a nerve breaker, to get the last set of nerves out. They didn’t have that this year, and then just being here, instead of in another space is just odd.”
One difference for the Wildcats was the students wearing masks during their performances, but Bauch says they had been working on that since the mask mandate came down. She’s hoping her two groups moving on can get a couple more practices before the state competition next week.
