DOT plow truck on Highway 141 near Perry

Travel is being impacted as the road conditions deteriorate in the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, most of the state roads in Dallas and Guthrie counties are completely covered with snow and travel is not advised. Additionally, tow services are not recommended in Dallas County. Most of the state roads in Greene County are completely covered with snow and there are areas of blowing snow.

The National Weather Service has Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties under a winter storm warning until 6am Tuesday. Snowfall could be as high as 14-inches in Dallas and Guthrie counties, and ten-inches in Greene County. Weatherology Meteorologist Michael Karow talks about the consistency of the snow with this storm.

“The snow won’t be the wet and heavy variety, but it will be powdery. But again the problem is, is it just going to be the amount of snow. So even though it’s going to be kind of lighter consistency it’s going to really stack up, and also those winds look to increase out of the east-northeast to around 15-25-miles-per-hour. So I think blowing snow will start to become an issue.”

Jefferson Public Work Director Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio plow crews will be out tonight clearing the city streets of snow, with all roads to be cleared from curb to curb by tomorrow morning. Stay tuned to Raccoon Valley Radio for road condition updates, as well as winter weather-related information and cancellations and postponements.
