The National Weather Service has updated its winter storm warning for the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area.

The National Weather Service has issued a new winter storm warning for Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties from 11am Monday to 6am Tuesday. Weatherology Meteorologist Michael Karow says snowfall could be as high as 14-inches in some areas, with the heaviest portions to begin mid-afternoon and into the evening. He talks about what the consistency of the snow will be like with this storm.

“The snow won’t be the wet and heavy variety, but it will be powdery. But again the problem is, is it just going to be the amount of snow. So even though it’s going to be kind of lighter consistency it’s going to really stack up, and also those winds look to increase out of the east-northeast to around 15-25-miles-per-hour. So I think blowing snow will start to become an issue.”

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams advises people to plan ahead to avoid difficulty traveling on the roads.

“Just kind of like the last big storm that we had. We’re not going to go out and risk our lives to get people until it’s an absolute must. Because I would image with the ditches being as full as they are from the last storm, the drifts are going to be significantly larger than normal, which will impede our ability to be able to get to you without a plow out.”

Williams suggests your vehicle has a full tank of gas, along with blankets, water and non-perishable food items if you get stuck on the side of the road. Karow notes that the winds will continue to blow snow across the roads during tomorrow morning’s commute.
