Greene County hosted high school wrestling for the first time ever on Friday night in the new gymnasium in Jefferson. Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams finished in second place in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament behind newcomer West Marshall (State Center). The Trojans had a huge final round and finished with 197 points to 180 for the Rams. Roland-Story (Story City) was third with 172, followed by PCM (Monroe) 151, South Hamilton (Jewell) 139, Nevada 84, and 62 for Saydel (Des Moines).

The Rams had eight wrestlers in the finals with four champions. Sophomore McKinley Robbins (120 lbs.) and senior Sawyer Schiltz (285) won their second conference tournament titles with junior Brenner Gallagher (113) and senior Brady Stauffer (138) each winning their first.

Freshman Jackson Turner (132), freshman Gavin Scheuermann (145), junior Nate Black (152), and junior Noble Hoyt (160) all finished in second place.

Gallagher improved to 8-1 with a major decision over Ben Sarver of R-S in the title match, 8-0. Robbins is 21-0 this season and 58-2 in his career after winning by fall in 3:12 vs. Kolton Keller of Saydel. Stauffer was an 11-2 major decision winner over Saydel’s Austin Chally for the title. In the semifinals, the Ram picked up career victory number 100 and he now stands at 21-1 this season. Schiltz was dominant in an 18-3 technical fall victory over Camdan Vincent of Nevada to improve to 15-5.

The Rams didn’t leave the gym until after 10 p.m., had a short night, then got on the bus early this morning to travel to Urbandale for weigh-ins at the Ed Winger Classic at 8 a.m. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. with no spectators allowed due to COVID-19 concerns. The tournament has 20 teams with some of the best in Iowa including 3A power Southeast Polk.
