It took three tries, but the girl/boy basketball varsity doubleheader between the Greene County and Perry teams did get played in Perry last night after postponements Dec. 1 and 12. Coach Todd Gordon’s girls’ team won 36-29 and Coach Chris Nelson’s boys’ squad won by a final of 71-38. Both games were broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Greene County is 5-7 in girls’ basketball after the non-conference win at Perry, while the Jayettes dropped to 2-11. Brianna Habben had 11 points with 10 by Makala Kafer to lead the Rams in scoring. Lydia Olejniczak had 15 before fouling out late in the contest for the Jayettes. Perry led 9-2 early, then the Rams had a 9-2 run of their own. After trailing 9-3 at the end of the first quarter, Greene County led 19-15 at the half, spurred by an 8-0 run in the second quarter. Greene County led by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter. Perry closed the gap to five points at 33-28, but could get no closer. The Rams were zero for 14 on three pointers, but 16 of 34 from two point range. A season low 16 turnovers aided Greene County and Perry turned the ball over 17 times.
The Greene County boys used a 35-point third quarter to blow the game open after leading 31-17 at the half. Richard Daugherty had 26 points and Bryce Stalder 24 as the Rams reached a season high in points. Perry turned the ball over 31 times to just 11 for Greene County. The continuous clock once the lead grew to 35 points was put in motion late in the third quarter. Perry out shot the Rams from three-point range (7 of 17 compared to five of 19), bt overall the Rams were 25 of 58 while the Blue Jays went 12 of 36 from the floor. Greene County is 3-0 this week and 4-8 on the season. Perry fell to 0-11.
