The West Central Valley Wildcats split a home doubleheader with Colfax-Mingo last night.
In the opener, the Lady Wildcats defeated the Tigerhawks 61-45. With 1:53 left in the opening quarter, sophomore Isabella Munoz drained a three-pointer and drew a foul, converting the four-point play and giving the Wildcats the lead from that point forward. West Central Valley led 14-8 after the first, 30-22 at half and 44-32 at the end of three. The girls improved to 5-8 on the season.
The nightcap came down to the wire, with the boys finally flailing to the Tigerhawks 51-47. Grant Caltrider knocked down a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 47-46 lead in the 4th quarter. Carter Gibson answered for the Tigerhawks with a turn-around jumper in the paint to retake the lead, and Colfax-Mingo extended their lead to three with a pair of free throws. The Wildcats attempted a game-tying three-point attempt, but the shot clanged high off the back of the rim. Colfax-Mingo converted a final free throw to put the game out of reach. The boys fell to 1-12 on the season.
The four-game homestretch continues tonight with a doubleheader against the Woodward-Granger Hawks. Tip-off for the girls game is at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.
