With the recent snowfall in Dallas County, avid snowmobilers may be itching to get out and hit the snow and it’s important to review some reminders.
The Dallas County Conservation Board says the Raccoon River Valley Trail (RRVT) is a great destination for snowmobiling. The Board says to check the towns on your planned route for snowmobiling policies as some towns don’t allow snowmobiling, while others may have curfews or alternate routes.
The trail requires a minimum of four inches of snow cover for snowmobiling and studs are not allowed. Riders must remain on the hard surface trail within the county-owned right-of-way and respect no trespassing wishes of other private landowners.
The State of Iowa requires snowmobiles to be registered and that you have an Iowa Department of Natural Resources snowmobile user permit. The RRVT requires the purchase of a trail permit which can be purchased on the DCCB website or at the trailheads.
