Now that there’s snow on the ground, snowmobiling is a recreational sport that most enjoy, and it’s also a good time to review some safety reminders.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio snowmobiles are legal to operate in the roadway ditches and on private property. There are specific ordinances and laws regarding operation within the surrounding communities.
“If they are going through towns, they have to take the most direct route through the town to get to their destination. They can’t be just riding up and down the streets. They can use the parking – where the grass is – to get from point A to point B through town. But most towns it is illegal to ride snowmobiles around on the streets.”
He reminds snowmobilers to make sure they obey traffic laws with intersections that have stop signs and always look in both directions at uncontrolled intersections before crossing. Williams adds to make sure you have a valid permit to operate a snowmobile.
