Sawyer Schiltz

Greene County high school senior wrestler Sawyer Schiltz will take a 5-4 record into the 2021 portion of the season, however that record includes a difficult early season schedule as he explained to Raccoon Valley Radio. “It was rough at the start as I wrestled ranked wrestlers back-to-back-to-back the first couple meets. It was honestly good to have some good competition right out of the gate. It didn’t really set me back. It made me want to work  harder every day.”

Schiltz has a habit of being behind on the scoreboard and from the underneath position, he’s able to score a reversal and record a fall. It happened last Jan. at the 2020 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament finals, and again shortly before the break for the holidays vs. a top 10 rated opponent. He was asked how he’s able to do that. “It’s never giving up! Finish your matches and wrestle 110% through the whole match, because it obviously can make a big difference. If the guy gets tired and you just keep plugging away, conditioning makes a difference. We’ve been working hard as a team to get our conditioning up so we can finish those matches.”

The Rams are set to open the 2021 portion of the season on Jan. 5 in Greenfield vs. Nodaway Valley, Martensdale-St. Mary’s, and Woodward-Granger.
