When the fire department needs to get somewhere or put out a fire it’s important to remember how the community can help out.

Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds says it’s important to remember to shovel sidewalks and clear around fire hydrants so they can better access the hydrant in case of a fire. Also, if first responders need to locate residences Hinds says it is important to make sure house numbers are visible so they can find the correct location to provide assistance.

“For medical reasons if the first responders need to go out we need to be able to locate them. Make sure that you have got house numbers that are visible (and) make sure that we can find your residence.”

Hinds says there are many things that can happen during the winter months such as water lines bursting or downed power lines and he suggests calling the proper authorities for those situations.
