As the snow falls and road conditions deteriorate during the winter season, it’s important to remember safety tips when driving on slick roads.
Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard reminds motorists following the most recent snow event to completely clean off their car including all windows and lights for maximum visibility and decreasing speed while driving.
While driving in winter weather coming up on emergency lights on the side of the road can be stressful. Leonard says slow down and move over if law enforcement is stopped on the road. Also, Leonard stresses the importance of educating younger drivers this winter.
“I would definitely take time, you know sooner the better, to talk to your kids about their driving habits. Because every year we have bad accidents and we just need to do a better job of encouraging our kids to slow down and pay attention to what’s happening around them.”
Also, Leonard says to keep items in your vehicle such as water, blankets among other things to keep warm if you do become stranded in inclement weather as it could take public safety personnel time to get to you. This coincides with keeping more gas in your vehicle during the winter months.
