Some hunters out there may be superstitious. Whether it’s a certain pair of socks, a routine, a brand of ammunition or any other factor that brought them success in the past, they stick to it and hope for that success this season.

But, if that perfect spot that’s served them well all these years isn’t quite working in 2020,  Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Greene and Guthrie Counties Jeremy King says this is the place to go.

“The sleepers that nobody thinks about that are definitely overlooked are our marsh deer. We have a handful of public marshes in the county such as Bays Branch, Lakin Slough and McCord Pond. All those places aren’t your traditional big timber deer areas people think of, they get completely overlooked. And they’re full of deer. There are deer in all those places. If somebody’s after a trophy buck, they’re in those places as well because nobody hunts them. I’d look at those and do a little leg work, get in there, stomp around, look for deer trails and sign and you have a pretty good chance of being successful in there.”

Second shotgun season runs through December 20.
