The home portion of the high school basketball season began for the Paton-Churdan teams with two Friday night victories over Glidden-Ralston in Rolling Valley Activities Conference play. The girls won 59-48 and the boys cruised to a 75-50 victory.
Danielle Hoyle had 20 points for the Rockets, who improved to 2-0 overall and in the conference, with 14 by Tessa Steimel, eight from Carmyn Paup, seven by Hannah Behrens and six for Chloe Berns. The Rockets made nine baskets from three-point range and they were nine of 15 shooting free throws. P-C led by a 24-22 margin at halftime and slowly widened the margin in the second half. G-R had 19 points from Paige Klocke and 15 by Gretchen Wallace. G-R made 10 three-pointers with five of them by Klocke.
Coach Bud Fagen’s P-C boys evened their record at 1-1 overall and in league play by cruising to a 25 point win, their first of the season. Joe Carey led the scoring with 19 points, while Connor Brus scored 14, Justin Stream 12, and 11 from Forest Thompson. Shaydon Thurman added eight points. Stream and Carey each stole the ball six times, and Carey dished out seven assists. Brus hauled in six rebounds with five each for Parker Fitzpatrick and Thompson. Coach Fagen called the game a great team effort.
