Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated to educate adults that if it is caught early, it can be highly treatable.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that women 40-49 years old should talk with their physician about when to start breast cancer screenings, and those between 50-74 years old and at average risk should get a mammogram every two years. American Cancer Society Senior Community Development Manager Kim Durst says those with a family history of breast cancer should talk with their physician sooner, “If it is caught early, I mean your chances of survival is over 90% now. So I mean that is the best time to catch cancer, any kind of cancer. But breast cancer, when you catch it early, that is when it’s most treatable and curable.”

Durst also advises men and women to lower their risk of breast cancer by taking care of your health, including keeping a healthy weight, exercising regularly, limiting alcoholic beverages, and breastfeeding your children, if possible.
