After enduring the first snowfall of the year earlier this week and with the possibility of more snow to start next week, the Greene County Secondary Roads Department is ready to ensure the roads are safe to travel.

County Engineer Wade Weiss reviews what they did earlier this year to stock up on sand and salt for the winter season.

“We contract with our salt supplier early in the spring, we’re not even out of winter before we’re contacting them for the salt for the next year. So we’re ready to go. We’ll do some mixing of salt and sand, and provide it to the communities around that need it, and then be ready to go.”

As for working in the winter months during the COVID-19 pandemic, Weiss is confident that his employees will be able to continue to work.

“I think we’ll be able to be just fine this winter. Our facility is spread out. Obviously, we have the four outlying facilities, along with our main shop in Jefferson. So the 24-26 people working here, we’re kind of spread out over the area. So I think we’re going to be just fine.”

According to the National Weather Service, there is a possibility of 1-3 inches of snow Sunday evening for Greene County.
