
Greene County and Southeast Valley (Gowrie) went the full five sets in the new Greene County high school gym in Jefferson on Monday night in the first round of Class 3A Region 2 volleyball. The Rams and Jaguars went back and forth all night and in the end, it was Greene County winning three sets to two. Scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 15-25, and 15-12. The Rams improved to 8-18 while SEV ended its season at 8-15.
Unofficially, senior Brianna Osterson had 26 kills with nine from sophomore Bella Schroder and six by senior Lily Muir. Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s team was down 2-8 in set one, but rallied. The Rams went ahead for a while, but trailed 21-22, then scored four of the last five points.
The second set was tied 20-20 before the Jaguars took command. The third set saw the Rams lead all the way except for an 8-8 tie. The nine point final margin was the biggest of the set. The fourth set was close for a while until the Jaguars went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-6 lead and they went on from there.
The deciding set had the Rams up 5-1, but SEV tied it at 7-7. The Rams then went ahead 14-10 before winning by three points.
There were some statistical oddities during the match. The Rams had eight service errors in the first set, yet won. They had zero errors serving in set two, and lost.
Next up is a Wednesday night Region 2 semifinal at Humboldt at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are ranked tenth and have a 31-3 record.
