U.S. Congresswoman Cindy Axne
There is still hope for some sort of coronavirus stimulus bill after President Donald Trump announced Tuesday to call off negotiations until after the election.
U.S. Representative for Iowa’s Third District Cindy Axne (D) told Raccoon Valley Radio Wednesday that by ending the bipartisan negotiations which had resumed this past week, President Trump has condemned Iowans to suffer and wait until he’s willing to return to the negotiating table. Axne says it’s unconscionable that he “has done so over claiming that he is uninterested in supporting” local services like schools and first responders, “Congress last approved a comprehensive coronavirus relief package six months ago, so the need for additional aid has only grown. We can see it right here: half of all restaurants are at risk of closing in the next six months, we’ve got millions of kids out of school trying to learn online, thousands of Iowa families struggling to keep food on their table and certainly roofs over their heads. So we can’t afford to waste any time coming to an agreement.”
As Axne urged for talks to resume, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly met Wednesday to make a deal, particularly to save the airline industry.
