The amount of tree debris caused by the August derecho storm in the City of Perry ranks among the largest in Iowa.

City Administrator Sven Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio the City had around 65,000 cubic yards of debris. Only Cedar Rapids and Ames reported more as a City. Peterson adds that getting the City cleaned up has been a team effort, “Looking at those populations and that we were right up there with those (cities) I think is a testament to how hard our community was hit. It’s a testament to how awesome of a job our staff did in managing that event and managing all of the cleanups, how fast we got through town and were able to clear the streets, clear all the debris piles, make two full passes through town then continue to do calls on an on-call basis. It’s just an incredible job by our staff, contractors, and community members who helped them out.”

The dumpsites are now closed as contractors are currently working on mulching the brush at Perry’s two locations. As far as fall yard waste, residents are encouraged to use the City’s residential pickup service that will pick up bagged or tied yard waste throughout Perry.
