The 10th annual Iowa’s Healthiest State Month continues today.

October is the Healthiest State Month and Iowans are encouraged to get out and walk for a half-hour today to promote health and fitness. There are more than two-dozen organized walks scheduled today throughout Dallas County. Dallas County Public Health Community Health Administrator Abigail Chihak tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she and some of her colleagues are taking some time to participate, “This week we’re celebrating physical activity and encouraging people to get an hour of physical activity every day. We invite folks to walk for 30 minutes. As an agency, we’re going on a walk over the lunch hour.”

Each week in October will focus on healthy habits promoted by 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count. This week it’s one or more hour of physical activity, next week is five or more fruits and vegetables, the week of October 19th is two hours or less of recreational screen time, and the week of October 26th is zero sugary drinks.

Participants are also encouraged to share their activities on social media with #HealthChoicesCount. You can find links to area walks here.
