Thursday was opening night for the new Greene County High School gymnasium on Jefferson’s northwest side, and by all accounts, the reviews were impressive. A long and large playing area with plenty of seating for fans met with approval. There was a bit of an opening night hiccup when apparently the concession stand popcorn machine set off the evacuation alarm. It was moments before the Rams and Southeast Valley (Gowrie) were to start the final match of the evening. The exit was short-lived as fans were allowed back in the building even before all were outside.
Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s Rams christened the gym with straight set wins over Ogden to start the evening by scores of 25-6 and 25-9. SEV topped Ogden in two, then the night ended with two straight Greene County losses to the Jaguars by 22-25 and 18-25 scores.
The Rams had no trouble with the Bulldogs in match number one. Greene County had a pair of 9-0 scoring runs, one in each set. The match vs. the Jaguars saw the Rams go ahead 21-16 in set one, then were out scored 9-1 the rest of the way and the Jaguars picked up the come-from-behind victory. Set two vs. SEV saw the Rams trail the entire set. The final margin was the largest margin.
Greene County is 5-11 on the season while SEV is 8-13 and Ogden fell to 1-7.
The Rams host a tournament tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. with games at both the new HS gym and at the old Middle School gym.
