The Greene County Secondary Roads Department has had its share of projects this year.
County Engineer Wade Weiss says due to the pandemic, crews were able to do socially distant projects such as applying new gravel to the non-hard surface roads throughout the county, along with concrete patching on the hard surface roads, and some minor bridge repair and replacement.
“We’ve done concrete patching. Our crew has been out doing that. We’re patching normally Monday-Thursday. It’s worked out very well with the stop light situation (and) we’ve not had any issues with that. As far as bridges, every two years we have inspections and we have a list of projects to finish as a result of those inspections. Those are ongoing throughout the year.”
When the derecho storm came through the County, Weiss says that due to their maintenance program of constantly trimming trees in the right-of-ways along county roads, the cleanup situation could have been much worse.
“This is a great benefit. We’ve cut down on the Squirrel Hollow (Park) pavement, and a number of people make a comment (to me) that that was probably a good thing, especially with that went on because that road could’ve been closed for quite some time. We react really quickly to these types of scenarios, and get roads reopened. But yes we do have some trees that we’ve pushed off (into the ditch) that we’re going to get picked up. We’ll be working through that in the fall.”
Weiss adds, they are finishing up their road maintenance and preparing for the winter season.
