As harvest season continues in Iowa, safety is of the utmost importance both in the field and on the road.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams reminds motorists that farm implements are slow-moving vehicles. He advises when passing to make sure there is no oncoming traffic and to not pass when in a no passing zone. He also suggests waiting to pass a farm vehicle when it isn’t approaching a farm field.
“A lot of the times now, especially as dusty as it is, all of their turn signals and lights are probably going to be covered with dirt and dust. So just keep in mind that if you see a tractor that’s going down the road, if you see a field drive or a road (turn) coming up try not to pass because they may have their turn signal on, you just can’t see it. And we don’t need any accidents.”
Williams notes farm machinery is quite large and may overhang both on the shoulder as well as the opposite lane of traffic.
