Plans for a beggars night were discussed during the Stuart City Council’s meeting Monday night.

Mayor Dick Cook informed the Council that the Stuart Chamber of Commerce is still comfortable with doing a beggars night event in downtown as long as the businesses are social distancing. Cook said the date is set for Saturday, October 31st with downtown trick or treating from 5-6:30 p.m., and residential from 6-8 p.m. Council member Kristina Renslow posed a suggestion for all residents intending to give out candy, “Can we make a recommendation that people hand the candy out, we can’t make them, but just make a recommendation that people hand the candy and not have all the kids grabbing it?”

Renslow also mentioned that anyone who is not comfortable with participating in beggars night because of the COVID-19 pandemic can simply stay home. For those unsure of how to celebrate Halloween, Guthrie County Public Health Director Jotham Arber recommends going online to halloween2020.org to see risk levels broken down by state and county based on new COVID-19 cases and find creative ways to spend the holiday.
