The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate made two campaign stops in Greene County Saturday.

Theresa Greenfield started the day with a tour of one of five wind turbines in the Junction Hilltop Wind Farm that is owned by local investor Tom Wind and eight other individuals. Wind said each turbine can generate 1.6 megawatts of energy and that their turbines’ power is collected by Alliant Energy, which then powers Louis Dreyfus in Grand Junction. He mentioned that Junction Hilltop has given over $500,000 to the local communities, with most of it going to the construction of the Grand Junction Community Center.

Greenfield was impressed with the operation and related back to helping farmers through her “Fair Shot for Farmers” plan. Her plan includes opening markets with other countries, leveling the playing field so that there’s competition to drive growth, using biofuels for other means to grow that industry, and investing in research and conservation to make that a new economic commodity.

“So that our landowners and our farmers are reaping the benefits of sequestering carbon. Tom (Wind) is reaping the benefits from investing in renewable energy, and I think we also – we all – need to reap the benefits investing in carbon sequestration, and our landowners. It’ll be a huge economic driver here.”

Greenfield also visited Chris Henning’s farm near Jefferson. She is challenging Republican incumbent Joni Ernst in the November general election.
