Greene County spotted Red Oak a 14 point lead on Friday night before the Rams righted the ship and rolled to a 55-14 Class 2A District 9 high school football victory on the road. Coach Caden Duncan’s team improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the district while the Tigers have now lost 17 games in a row dating back to 2018. They are 0-5 this season and 0-3 in District 9. The game was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The Tigers’ Homecoming game began with the home team doing almost everything right and Greene County struggling on both sides of the ball, plus special teams. A pair of muffed punts by the Rams on the first possession set the Tigers up at the Greene County 32 and RO scored on a six play drive capped by a Riley Fouts run of six yards for a 7-0 lead. After a punt by the Rams, RO scored again with sophomore Dawson Bond running the ball 61 yards for a TD to put the home team ahead 14-0.
From that point on, it was 55 consecutive points for the Rams. Jackson Morton scored on a four yard run and it was 14-7 after one quarter. Morton made it 14-13 on a TD run of 45 yards, but the extra point kick failed. The Rams took a 20-14 lead on a Jaxon Warnke punt return for a touchdown covering 48 yards. Just before halftime, Morton scored on a run of four yards and the Rams led 27-14 at intermission
The second half was more Greene County. Nathan Black got into the scoring act on a 10 yard run to make it 34-14. Black scored again, this time was 34 yards out, and the lead grew to 41-14. Warnke caught a pass of 35 yards from Bryce Stalder late in quarter number three for a 48-14 lead, and the last TD came on a run of 10 yards by Stalder with 5:37 left in the game that put the continuous clock in effect.
Black ran the ball 15 times for 115 yards and Morton had seven carries for 83 yards. The rushing yards were career highs for both. The Rams finished with a season best 243 rushing yards. Stalder went 8-14-0 passing for 149 yards. The 392 yards were also a season high.
RO’s points scored and points allowed were also season highs. The Tigers entered the game with a scoring average of just five points. They were also averaging only 99 yards on the ground 25 through the air, but ran for 172 and passed for 29 for 201 total yards.
RO had just one turnover, a Zach Goff interception that set up the second Greene County touchdown. The Rams lost a fumble in the first half in addition to the two muffed punts.
Next up for Greene County is the last home game on the schedule. It’s Oct. 2 with Clarinda at Linduska Field on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com at 7 p.m.
