The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors approved payroll change notices for two new Sheriff’s Deputies and denied one for a part-time civil clerk assistant at their regular meeting Tuesday.
Sheriff Marty Arganbright informed the Board that after having five applicants go through the interview and test process, he has hired Shane Jones and Taylor Wheatley to start October 7th. Both Jones and Wheatley are certified officers and have completed their contracts with the Jefferson and Panora police departments, respectively. Arganbright mentioned that they both applied for the Sheriff’s Office five years ago, and they both have a vested interest in working in Guthrie County. Jones and Wheatley will undergo a six month probationary period and will be filling the positions vacated by Steven Henry and Jim Mink, which are paid for by a 28E agreement with the City of Guthrie Center. It’s been almost a year that the two positions have been vacant, as Henry and Mink resigned following a shooting incident in Stuart last October.
Arganbright also presented a payroll change notice to hire Jackie Sloss as a part-time civil clerk, which he expressed is greatly needed and was previously filled before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supervisors denied the agenda item, as Arganbright offered Sloss $20 an hour, and the Board has previously capped part-time clerks’ hourly pay at $17.50. Arganbright said he will contact Sloss to see if she is still interested in the job, and if not he will look to hire someone else.
