The Perry City Council set dates for open burning this fall.

Two residents spoke against open burning during the public forum, pleading that its effect on the air quality presents health risks to the community. When it came time to discuss setting the dates for this fall’s open burning season, Councilmembers Dean Berkland and Vicki Klein suggested to not allow open burning and rely on the City’s yard waste pickup service as a substitute. Klein also mentioned that she constantly sees residents disobey the ordinance by burning yard waste at night and outside the allotted three-week window. After discussion, the Council approved open burning from 10 a.m. until sunset from November 2nd-22nd. The resolution passed 3-2 with Berkland and Klein voting nay.

The Council also heard the latest update on the McCreary Community Center project. City Administrator Sven Peterson says the project is nearly complete and is planning for an October 1st re-opening. The City is planning to host a ceremony to celebrate the facility’s reopening and allow the public to view the improvements.

The Council also approved the latest payment application on the McCreary Community Center Project worth $118,240 and four change orders to the Perry Public Library renovation project totaling $5,779.
