Despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing several families to make hard choices for their children’s education, homeschooling hasn’t seen much change in Greene County.
Greene County Home School Assistance Program Coordinator Marla Orfield tells Raccoon Valley Radio there are less than ten students that have registered for the home school program through the school district. She says typically 1-8 families participate in the program. Additionally, there are five home schooled students who have enrolled and do not participate in the HSAP, which those students are homeschooled independently.
Orfield says when families sign up for HSAP, they have to meet with her four times per quarter. She explains that during these meetings is where the program’s curriculum or lesson planning is scheduled, and they talk about the goals, the student’s work, the type of teaching and learning techniques that work best for the student, assess their program and record keeping. Those that sign up for HSAP are provided with resources through the school district, whereas those who are homeschooled independently do not get the district’s resources.
