As all students start back to school in Greene County this week, that means there will be increased traffic and kids in different communities.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio buses will be picking up and dropping off kids both in the surrounding cities as well as the rural portions of the county. He reminds motorists to be prepared to stop when the bus’ yellow warning lights are flashing and then turn red with the stop arm extended from the side of the bus. He says it is illegal to pass a stopped bus and motorists could face a $750 fine.

Williams describes other potential hazards for motorists to be aware of.

“Just keep in mind there is going to be kids standing out along the gravel roads and probably even walking on the gravel roads. So just watch what you’re looking for in front of you, especially with the corn, it’s tall and it’s hard to see, especially around corners. And especially around the new high school (in Jefferson). There’s a lot of traffic – as we have seen – and it’s kind of bottling traffic up, so just keep in mind there’s a lot more drivers out there that aren’t as experienced as a lot of us so watch what they’re doing also.”

Williams adds to be aware of the designated bus drop-off and pick-up locations in the cities because there will be a number of kids congregating in those areas and may not always pay attention to other vehicles on the road.
