Following another dry week, the extreme drought conditions in west-central Iowa have worsened.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 14.6% of the State is experiencing extreme drought conditions, up from 6.52% from last week. The southeastern corner of Dallas County is classified as severe drought conditions. While the rest of Dallas and the entirety of Greene and Guthrie counties are designated as extreme drought. Extreme droughts can lead to fish kills, dry pastures, worsen seasonal allergies, and stress farmers. The estimated population in drought areas has increased by nearly a million people from last week to 2,456,971. 

According to the National Weather Service in August, Jefferson had 2.04 inches of precipitation, Perry has 1.61 inches, and Guthrie Center reports .80 inches, all well below the monthly average.
