About 17 people gathered for the weekly racial injustice protest at the Greene County Courthouse in Jefferson Tuesday.
The event started with a few people sharing poems and personal experiences of racism. Co-organizer Dale Hanaman then told the crowd to continue to “Raise the Consciousness” about racism and those who don’t have a voice. He describes how the protests have not only stayed along the roots from the beginning with the Black Lives Matter movement, but also with being a voice for those in Greene County that are systematically missed.
“We’re aware that in terms of the numbers of black families in Greene County, there are not many. But there are many who need other kinds of needs that are not remembered, (like) poor and low income. People who have no voice for one reason or another, whether they’re a single mother, whether they are a young family, all kinds of things.”
Hanaman urges everyone to be more aware of those situations and stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves. The weekly protests will continue on Tuesdays at 12:15pm at the courthouse in Jefferson.
