The Jefferson Swimming Pool is starting its procedure to close for the year, following a unique season with COVID-19 precautions.

Swimming Pool Manager Simeon Lang tells Raccoon Valley Radio they did not have a positive case of the virus throughout the season that began on June 6th with lap swim initially and then a full opening on June 13th. He says some of the precautions that were in place included marked six-feet distance at the concession stand and the pool entrance, flowing foot traffic in one direction on the pool deck and the staff constantly disinfecting handrails, ladders, and locker rooms. 

Lang talks about getting through the majority of the pool season without a positive COVID-19 case.

“(I’m) feeling very fortunate because so much was up in the air (and) maybe it was taking a little bit of a risk. But we wanted to make that available to the public, not only for our community but we had those visitors come in to where some pools did not open up at all this summer. So we had a few visitors from out of town take advantage of our facility.”

Lang says as of Tuesday there were 5,133 people that visited the pool, with the busiest month being July with 2,492. He points out the attendance was down slightly this year, but that is mostly due to COVID-19. Lang notes open pool season is over for the year and they will continue with adult lap swim from 11:30am-1pm daily until September 5th.
